GUIDELINES
The Juan Young Trust is now CLOSED. No applications are being accepted.

The Trust operated for 24 years and awarded $42,200,000.00 to Oregon non-profit organizations. Seek out the many trusts and foundations in Oregon and in the nation for your continued support.

The Juan Young Trust is closing in 2023. The Trust will operate as normal in 2022 and 2023 with the normal quarterly grant cycles and award dates. The final cycle will be 7/1/2023 - 9/30/2023. No grant applications will be accepted after 9/30/2023.

The Juan Young Trust was established under the will of Juan Young and began funding grants in February of 2000. Grant making authority is vested solely in the two individual trustees.

Grants are awarded to 501(c)(3) organizations based in Oregon. No grants are made outside Oregon. Grants are funded for projects and activities to enhance the health, education and welfare of children under the age of 21 years old.
GENERALITIES
Grants are generally limited to projects and programs conducted by qualified organizations within the state of Oregon, with emphasis on the Portland Area. Grants for annual operating budgets, debt retirement, or to help defray deficits are not favored. Grants are usually awarded for a limited time, such as one or two years.

The trust is unlikely to make any substantial grants in the field of religion
LIMITATIONS
​Activities or programs NOT supported by the trust.

Assistance to individuals, except as participants are chosen by the grantee institution in an organized scholarship program.

Program-related loans or investments.

Efforts to carry on propaganda or to influence legislation.

Grants to organizations classified as “private foundations” under sec. 509(a) of the internal revenue code.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A GRANT
STEP 1
Contact the Juan Young Trust for a copy of the grant application, complete the two page application and include:

A narrative proposal and/or letter of length adequate to help the Trust understand your organization and request. Brevity is appreciated.

501(c)(3) documentation from the IRS.
-
List of your Board of Directors.

Detailed budget for proposed project.
-
Statement describing financial condition of applicant organization to include last fiscal year, the current year to date and most recent audited report (if available).
STEP 2
Submit the original and one copy of the above listed materials including the two page application, single side printing, unstapled, on 8 1/2” x 11” white paper, and photocopy ready to the Juan Young Trust to the appropriate address. Grant requests from organizations east of the Willamette River and east of the Cascade Range (from the McKenzie Pass to the Southern Oregon Border) will be reviewed by the Eastern Division. Grant requests from organizations west of the Willamette River and west of the Cascade Range (from the McKenzie Pass to the Southern Oregon Border) will be reviewed by the Western Division.

Proposals will be reviewed quarterly.

Deadlines for submission are: 12/31, 3/31, 6/30 & 9/30.

Determination letters are mailed during the months of February, May, August and November for the Western Division and the months of January, April, July and October for the Eastern Division.

Proposals may be submitted at any time, but must be received in their entirety within the quarterly period to qualify for the applicable review period.

No grant proposal will be forwarded to a future quarterly period.

Declined grant proposals will not be reconsidered in the same calendar year.

Site visits are initiated by the Trust.
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
CLOSURE:
The Trust is closing the Scholarship Program in 2022. The final scholarships will be awarded for the traditional 2022-2023 school year. Eligible applicants must notify the respective Trustee before May 1, 2022 to be considered for a scholarship award.

BACKGROUND:
The Juan Young Trust Scholarship Program is funded by the trust established under the will of Juan Young. Juan Young was a long-time employee, officer, and stockholder of Kienow’s Food Stores.
​
GOAL:
The Juan Young Trust seeks to award grants to colleges and universities in Oregon to provide scholarships to lineal descendants of former employees of Kienow’s Food Stores Inc. and/or Kienow’s Wholesale Grocery Company, as well as to the general student population.
​
AVAILABILITY:
Preference for these scholarships will be given to individuals who are lineal descendants of former employees. The employee must have worked for Kienow’s for at least two years as a full or part-time employee. Each college and university will secure sufficient written proof from the applicant to verify the applicant’s relationship to the employee and the employee’s work history.
​
Lineal descendants of the Trustees of the Juan Young Trust are not eligible to apply for or receive these scholarships.

CRITERIA: Recipients must at the time of application:

Be under the age of 21 years old.

Be a resident of Oregon.
-
Be acceptable to the college or university as a full time student.
​
In order to acknowledge a wide range of students, the scholarship is not awarded based on financial need. The Trustees and each institution will work together to develop additional criteria, if necessary, to address the selection of students from the general student population.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Each institution will develop policies and procedures to advertise, recruit, and select recipients that meet the goals and objectives of the Juan Young Trust. All decisions regarding recipients will be the responsibility of the scholarship committee chosen by the institution. Proof of preference will be solely the responsibility of the institution. Applications from the general student population can be considered in the event there are insufficient lineal descendants applying.

FUNDING PROCESS:
The Trustees of the Juan Young Trust will work with the institutions on an annual basis to determine the number and amount of scholarships to be awarded. The scholarship package for each institution will apply for a one year period. No multi-year commitments will be made by the Trust.

EVALUATION AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:
The Trustees of the Juan Young Trust request that each institution prepare a written report of pertinent information regarding the scholarship recipients. Recipient information such as name, date of birth, hometown, high school attended, relationship to Kienow’s employee (if applicable) will be provided to both Trustees AFTER the scholarships have been awarded.

Effective 1/1/2009, the Eastern Division of the Juan Young Trust will only be funding scholarship requests from the lineal descendents of former Kienow’s Food Stores employees. The Eastern Division territory can be viewed on the “contact” page of this website. A lineal descendent is a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, great grandson, great granddaughter and so on. If you are a qualified lineal descendent, meet the requirements listed on the scholarship program page and wish to attend a school in the Eastern Division, please contact us directly by phone or email to start the scholarship procedure. The contact information can be found on the “contact” page of this website. You can also contact the financial aid or scholarship office at the institution that you are planning to attend and they can contact us to begin the procedure.

Effective 1/1/2018, the Western Division of the Juan Young Trust will continue granting to college and universities to support the Annual Juan Young Trust Scholarship Program for lineal descendants only. A lineal descendant is a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, great grandson, great granddaughter, great great grandson or great great granddaughter. If you are a qualified lineal descendant, meet the requirements listed on the scholarship program page and wish to apply, please contact trustee, Antoinette Kienow Arenz via phone or email. Juan Young Trust is a spend-down trust. The current estimate is that the Juan Young Trust will terminate within five years. As the termination date nears, Juan Young Trust will contact all the colleges and universities participating in the scholarship program and confirm the termination of the Annual Juan Young Trust Scholarship Program.

The Juan Young Trust operates a Western and an Eastern Division. The Western Division reviews proposals from organizations west of the Willamette River and west of the Cascade Range from the McKenzie Pass to the Southern Oregon border. The Eastern Division reviews proposals from organizations east of the Willamette River and east of the Cascade Range from the McKenzie Pass to the Southern Oregon border. The geographic focus of the Juan Young Trust is the State of Oregon with emphasis on the greater Portland area.
